CMD+R is to boot into recovery mode, not Linux. I would think you would choose which OS after clicking the Alt key at startup. WebSure. Just resize the mac partition and install to the empty space. It won't have the ability to switch OS from the GUI, but you can simply hold Option at boot and select the OS you want. Depending on the distro, it may just show up as "EFI Boot". Obviously, ALWAYS back up your data before you start messing with partitions.
