Web1 jan. 2024 · The crater has all the hallmarks of a massive meteorite impact. The central or peak ring has an average diameter of about 50 miles (80 km). Geologists believe the initial impact blasted a plume of material into the upper atmosphere. Then as the crater collapsed inward, a central surge of molten rock shot upward to the height of Mt. Everest.
