WebMost often when people talk about neo-Marxism they mean Western Marxism, or some strain within it (stuff like the Keynesian Monthly Review School, Freudo-Marxism a la Marcuse or Hegel-Marxism like Lukács). So I'd stick to Western Marxism as an actually useful concept and drop the neo-Marxism stuff since it has no real explanatory power, imo. Webnoting, however, that many key figures in the neo-Marxist movement in American sociology explicitly embraced the task of offering an em pirical challenge to non-Marxist sociology as the appropriate test of Marxist theory (e.g., Burawoy 1982, Wright 1985). The proof of the pudding, as Marx famously said, is in the eating.
